Some artists used their moment in the spotlight to give a glimpse into future projects, such as Taylor Swift, who announced an Oct. 21 release date for a “brand-new album” in her acceptance speech.
Others used their moment to highlight wins for social equity, or encourage political activism.
Lizzo, who finally won her first Moon Person in the Video for Good category, urged people to “vote to change some of these laws that are oppressing us.” And Dove Cameron dedicated an award as Best New Artist to “all the queer kids out there who don’t feel that they can take up space and inhabit the fullness of who they are.”
“Thank you for getting an overtly queer song onto mainstream radio,” Cameron said.
As usual, a red carpet walk gave fans a glimpse of some of their favorite stars – and their eye-catching outfits – prior to the ceremony. See more red carpet fashion from the evening here.
