Nation’s ‘Largest’ Kosher Food Manufacturer Shutting Down Newark Plant

The Manischewitz Company issued a WARN notice to 169 workers at its Newark headquarters.

NEWARK, NJ — The Manischewitz Company has issued a WARN notice to 169 workers at its Newark headquarters in advance of the planned closure of its plant in the city.

According to a state WARN notice, which employers are required to post 60 days in advance of covered plant closings and mass layoffs, the effective date is Sept. 14, 2017.

“At a challenging time in the retail and grocery business, we have made the difficult decision to close our plant in Newark,” a spokesperson for the company told NJBiz.com. “Beginning this fall, our products will be made at more modern New Jersey facilities. “We are doing everything possible within our financial ability to help affected employees find new jobs. We will continue to bring high quality, innovative products to consumers as we have for 129 years.”

The company identifies itself as “the nation’s largest manufacturer of processed kosher food products and the number one baker of matzo in the entire world.”

The company’s announcement comes six years after it relocated its headquarters to Newark, a move that then-mayor Cory Booker said makes him the “proudest mayor in America.”
