New Year Brings Toll Hike At Bridges, Tunnels In NJ, NY (See How Much)

Drivers will pay more at the George Washington Bridge, Lincoln and Holland tunnels, and other Port Authority crossings in 2024.

NEW JERSEY/NEW YORK — Tolls are going up for drivers who want to cross the Hudson River in 2024.

A toll hike will take effect at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 7 for commuters who use bridges and crossings managed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. These include the George Washington Bridge, the Lincoln Tunnel, the Holland Tunnel, Bayonne Bridge, Goethals Bridge and the Outerbridge Crossing.

Most drivers (those with vehicles having two axles and single rear wheels) will see a 63-cent increase per trip to their E-ZPass fees, which will go from $14.75 to $15.38 during peak hours.

Don’t have a New York or New Jersey-issued E-ZPass? The toll will increase from $17 to $17.63 – regardless of when you cross.

Discount bridge and tunnel toll plans will continue to remain in effect, along with the Port Authority’s Staten Island Bridges Plan (learn more here).

Tolls are collected entering New York. No tolls are collected entering New Jersey. All Port Authority crossings are cashless and no longer accept cash toll payments.

Why are tolls going up? Here’s what the bi-state agency had to say earlier this year while putting the finishing touches on its annual budget:

“Automatic inflation-based adjustments are scheduled for implementation at the bridges and tunnels on Jan. 7, 2024, and at AirTrain rail systems on March 3, 2024, as established by three resolutions of the Port Authority’s Board of Commissioners (2008, 2011, 2019). From September 2022 through September 2023, the consumer price index increased 3.7 percent, which triggered an annual automatic inflation-based bridge and tunnel toll adjustment of $0.63, as well as an AirTrain fare increase of $0.25. Port Authority tolls are only one-way, and these incremental adjustments will result in Port Authority tolls similar to round-trip tolls of other regional systems.”

The current and new toll rates can be seen in the charts below, or viewed online here.

NOTE: “Peak hours” are as follows: Weekdays: 6 to 10 a.m., 4 to 8 p.m. / Saturday and Sunday: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. “Overnight hours for trucks” take place Sundays to Thursdays, from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. the following morning.
