New Year's In Newark: Road Checkpoints, Youth Curfew

Newark police will be holding road safety checkpoints and enforcing the city's longstanding youth curfew law for the New Year's holiday.

NEWARK, NJ — Newark police will be holding multiple “road safety checks” throughout the city on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. In addition, police will be enforcing the city’s juvenile curfew law, authorities announced Monday.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, road safety checkpoints will be established citywide to ensure public safety during the holidays.

Police said that the Juvenile Curfew Initiative will also be in effect for New Year’s Eve. Authorities said that the local law was established to safeguard juveniles by ensuring that they remain under the supervision of a parent or guardian at night.

“While parents have the primary responsibility to provide for the safety and welfare of their children, the City of Newark is committed to preserving the safety of its children and preventing juvenile crime and victimization,” police stated.

Police said that officers will enforce the curfew ordinance upon unaccompanied minors under age 18 who are more than 100 yards from their residence from 11 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. the following day.
