NEWARK, NJ -- A historic election took place in Newark on Tuesday, April 16, with local residents getting a chance to directly vote on the public school district's budget for the first time in more than two decades.

Newark residents also got the chance to vote for members of their local school board, the result of a ballot question taken during the 2018 midterm election.

According to unofficial results from the Essex County Clerk's Office, with 108 out of 108 districts reported, the budget has apparently passed by a landslide, with more than 80% of voters giving the thumbs-up.
