Newark 2024 School Election Results: Incumbents Have Big Lead (UPDATE)

Election Day may be over in Newark, but some votes are still unreported. Here are the updated results.

NEWARK, NJ — Newark voters went to the polls on Tuesday to cast ballots for their local board of education. And according to unofficial election results, the four incumbent candidates have apparently recaptured their seats on the board.

There were nine candidates competing for three general seats on the Newark Board of Education in the city’s 2024 school election (see below). Another candidate, Kanileah Anderson, ran unopposed in a special election for an unexpired at-large seat on the board. See Related: Newark School Election Is Here (What To Know For Tuesday)

According to the Essex County Clerk’s Office, with 161 of 172 districts reported, the three incumbent candidates have significant leads: Dawn Haynes, Helena Vinhas and Vereliz Santana. Each is part of the Moving Newark Schools Forward slate, along with Anderson, which is backed by Newark Mayor Ras Baraka.

Here are the unofficial results as of April 22 (check back for updated results):

  • Debra Salters – 1,342 votes (11.32%)
  • Vereliz Santana – 2,619 votes (22.09%)
  • Helena Vinhas – 2,636 votes (22.23%)
  • Dawn Y. Haynes – 2,453 votes (20.69%)
  • Sheila Montague – 993 votes (8.37%)
  • Latoya Jackson – 754 votes (6.36%)
  • Che J.T. Colter – 356 votes (3.00%)
  • Muta El-Amin – 374 votes (3.15%)
  • Jimmie White – 331 votes (2.79%)
