Newark Airport shut down for a brief period of time Saturday morning after a plane was forced to make an emergency landing at the New Jersey airport. Flights have since resumed though not all runways appear to be open.

Because of the airport emergency, all runways were closed after 8:30 a.m. Authorities advised passengers to contact their airlines for flight status updates.

The Federal Aviation Administration said a plane had to make an emergency landing because of a possible fire.

An Air Transat Flight reported a possible fire in the cargo area and diverted to Newark at 8:30 a.m. Passengers evacuated just after the plane landed.

The plane had departed from Montreal and was heading to Florida.

The plane landed safely. Two minor injuries were reported, though they were unrelated to any smoke condition.

Flights have resumed although one runway was reportedly still closed.
