Newark Apartment Building Fire Rages, Displaces Families (VIDEOS)

Authorities evacuated an apartment building in Newark after large fire broke out. A nearby school canceled classes for the day, reports say.

NEWARK, NJ — A large fire at an apartment building in Newark displaced multiple families and forced an evacuation early Friday morning, authorities said.

The fire took place at a building near Sussex Avenue and Third Street. Emergency responders evacuated four families, but there were no injuries, Newark officials told Pix 11 News.

The principal of the Sussex Avenue Renew School – which is located down the block – told Pix 11 that the school canceled classes Friday.

“It's filled with smoke, so the superintendent chose to close the school for the day,” Principal Darlene Gearhart told ABC New York. “It's basically on the first floor, the second and third floor didn't get affected as much however it's still not safe to have students in the school.”

The cause of blaze has yet to be determined, NBC New York reported.
