NEWARK, NJ — The power of spoken word was on full display during a recent event at Amiri Baraka Poetry Camp in Newark.

During a series of seminars, Newark teachers and poets worked with four classes of 12-18 youth, ages 8-15, drawn from The HUBB, the Boys & Girls Club of Newark, and F.H.A.K. 2.0, a summer camp located in the Clubhouse Center of Hope.

Instructors conducted workshops in writing poetry and prose, black literary culture, critical reading, spoken word performance and "journaling." The camp was led by Newark-based artists Fayemi Shakur, Jasmine Mans, Mani Martinez and Purple Haze.
