Newark Celebrates 1st Day Of School Under Local Control (PHOTOS)

The 1st day of school represented a landmark for Newark, which regained local control earlier this year after 22 years of being run by NJ.

NEWARK, NJ — The Newark Public School District celebrated its first day of classes on Tuesday in a unique way, giving more than 1,000 teachers and staff members the morning off work to return to their old alma maters.

As thousands of students filled classrooms throughout the city, a huge group of Newark’s public school teachers got a chance to revisit the places where it all began, a real-life demonstration of the district’s theme of “Sankofa,” the Ghanaian belief and practice of returning to one’s roots in order to move forward.

This year’s first day of school represents a landmark for the district, which regained local control of its operations earlier this year after 22 years of being run by the state.
