Newark ‘Chemical Spill’ Causes Evacuation On Hyatt Avenue: PD

Newark emergency responders evacuated part of Hyatt Avenue after receiving reports about a "chemical spill," authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — Newark emergency responders evacuated part of Hyatt Avenue on Wednesday after receiving reports about a “chemical spill,” authorities said.

A spokesperson with the Newark Department of Public Safety said that city fire and police responded to the 20-block of Hyatt Avenue around 9:50 a.m. after receiving a call about a chemical spill. About three buildings - including 50 people - were evacuated while Newark Fire Division personnel used water to cool down the tank holding the product.

Newark authorities later said that the incident was the result of a "chemical product overheating during processing."
