Newark Cops Shoot Man Who Allegedly Tried To Run Them Down: Reports
Newark officers opened fire on the car after the driver allegedly tried to hit them, prosecutors say.

NEWARK, NJ — Authorities are investigating a police-involved shooting that took place in Newark early Friday morning.
According to police, the shooting happened after officers attempted to stop a vehicle for an unspecified traffic violation around 1:30 a.m. on South 11th Street. The driver allegedly drove off, eluding officers and nearly striking one of them, ABC New York reported.
The officers then allegedly opened fire on the car as it sped away, authorities said.

No law enforcement officers suffered injury during the encounter, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office stated.
After the shooting, the suspect drove himself to University Hospital in Newark and checked himself into the emergency ward with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, police said.

Officers later found his car parked outside with a hole in the window, ABC New York stated.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office reported Friday afternoon that the suspect was in stable condition.
As of Friday afternoon, nobody has been charged with a crime in connection with the shooting, prosecutors said.
CBS New York posted a transcript of police scanner audio that reportedly describes what happened just before the shooting:
“Springfield Ave., South 11 Street. We had a car pull over and try to hit us. Have 503 come over here,” one officer says.
“They have a vehicle that just tried to hit them. He discharged his weapon. They are gonna be at Springfield Avenue and 11 Street,” another responds.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is conducting an investigation into the incident.
