NEWARK, NJ — Newark police officers helped to stop a suicide attempt last weekend, the second such rescue made in two weeks, authorities said.
Newark officers in the 5th Precinct responded to a call from the Elizabeth Police Department about a suicide attempt around 6:40 p.m. on Saturday. The EPD told their Newark counterparts that there was a man standing on the opposite side of the guardrail at the Haynes Avenue overpass.
When Newark officers arrived on the scene, they managed to grab the man and pull him over the guardrail to safety, according to the Newark Department of Public Safety.

The attempted suicide was the second time that Newark police have come to a resident’s rescue in as many weeks. On Sept. 28, Newark police officers – working in concert with the family members of a local teen – helped to avert a teen’s "suicide by cop" attempt on Treacy Avenue.
