Newark Cops, Suspect Trade Gunfire After Fatal Shooting: ECPO

Officers in the area heard gunshots and immediately rushed to the scene. Here's what happened next, authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — A shooting suspect and Newark police exchanged gunfire in the wake of a fatal shooting on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, a suspect has been arrested in connection with the deadly shooting, which took place on the North 9th Street.

Officers in the area heard gunshots and immediately rushed to the scene. The officers and the suspect fired at each other as police attempted to make an arrest, but nobody was injured, authorities said.

The shooting victim – Tyron Whitley, 38, of Newark – was pronounced dead at University Hospital in Newark.

The suspect has been identified as A-Jahada Amirah Bostwick, 26, of Irvington. She has been charged with first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder and weapons offenses, prosecutors said.
