Newark Council Race Nears Finish Line: Here’s Who Is Running In 2022

There are no shortage of candidates seeking seats on the Newark City Council. See who's running for office this year.

NEWARK, NJ — There are no shortage of candidates vying for seats on the Newark City Council in 2022.

Local voters will be asked to cast ballots for at-large and ward council members as part of the municipal nonpartisan election on Tuesday, May 10 (see the list below).

Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. The last day to register or transfer to vote in the Newark municipal nonpartisan election was April 19. The last day to apply for by mail for a vote-by-mail ballot is May 3.

AT LARGE (Vote For Four)

Incumbent at-large council members C. Lawrence Crump, Carlos Gonzalez and Luis Quintana will be joined by Louise Scott-Rountree. They will run unopposed for four at-large seats.

CENTRAL WARD (Vote for One)

Incumbent councilwoman LaMonica McIver will face a challenge from Shawn McCray in the city’s Central Ward.

EAST WARD (Vote for One)

Four candidates are seeking to replace Augusto Amador in the city’s East Ward, who is not running for re-election: Anthony Campos, Jonathan Seabra, Michael Silva and Louis Weber.

NORTH WARD (Vote for One)

North Ward council member Anibal Ramos Jr. is running unopposed for re-election.

SOUTH WARD (Vote for One)

There is a crowded field in the city’s South Ward, where six candidates are vying to replace John Sharpe James, who is not running for re-election. The candidates are: Terrance Bankston, Christina Cherry, Patrick Council, Douglas Freeman, Trenton Jones and Cynthia Truitt-Rease.

WEST WARD (Vote for One)

In the city’s West Ward, there are six candidates seeking to replace Joseph McCallum, who is not running for re-election. McCallum pleaded guilty in connection with a bribery and kickback scheme in March.

The candidates are: Lyndon Brown, Oscar James II, Lavita Johnson, Dupre Kelly, Michelle Lyn Middleton, and Chigozie Onyema.
