Newark Councilwoman Helps Spearhead Public Art Project

Art shouldn't just be limited to class trips to the museum, councilwoman LaMonica McIver says.

NEWARK, NJ — Art shouldn’t just be limited to class trips to the museum, a Newark councilwoman says.

Central Ward Councilwoman LaMonica McIver recently announced the rollout of a public art initiative she helped to spearhead: the “Hope Box Project.”

According to McIver, the project aims to expand arts and culture in communities within the Central Ward. Through the effort, a local artist decorated 15 utility boxes that were placed throughout the ward.

Newark public school students helped to design the artwork, brainstorming positive images based on themes like “public safety” or “city cleanliness.” Prizes were provided to the First, Second, Third place winners.

The Hope Box Art Murals is supported by the LaMonica McIver Civic Association (LMCA) Advisory Committee in association with Newark Arts.

“Newark is committed to beautifying our public spaces, supporting our local artists, and encouraging young artists to thrive,” McIver said.

“I know the importance of art in our community and the positive effects on a child’s self-esteem,” the councilwoman continued. “Art should not just be limited to class trips to the museum … children should see themselves reflected in positive images throughout their community.”
