Clinton Hill Community Action (CHCA) is pleased to announce the launch of the first senior sponsored cookout since the inception of the Seniors in Action program at CHCA. This event is made possible through partnerships with the Grotta Foundation (www.grottafund.org) and AARP.
The event will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2024, from 12 PM - 3 PM at the Soundstage located on the corner of Clinton and Peshine Avenue in Newark. CHCA sponsors this event as part of the Seniors in Action program which was created as a way to keep the seniors in the neighborhood engaged, informed, and part of the vibrant community of Clinton Hill. Senior citizens contribute to the rich history of Clinton Hill, and this gives them a space to come together. “It’s almost like they've just been waiting for the opportunity to lend their voices this entire time,” says Shakur Gibson, Resident Power Builder and Program Manager at CHCA.

The group comprises seniors from the community, who are highly active and engaged in the Seniors In Action activities. Residents of all the Senior Buildings in Clinton Hill as well as residents from private homes make up the group. They have their Seniors In Action Steering Committee and meet twice a month on Wednesdays. These meetings provide a meaningful time for participants to engage in fun activities while having a space to voice concerns about safety, technology, recreation, and community issues.
The Seniors In Action also participate in CHCA’s other work. You can find them cleaning the neighborhood with Beautify the Block, volunteering and attending the artsXchange, or working with the Housing Justice Action Team.
