Newark Event Will Promote Peace After Charlottesville

"A Love and Peace Town Hall," an event in response to the tragedy in Charlottesville, Virginia, will take place on Aug. 19.

NEWARK, NJ — Newark area residents are invited to “A Love and Peace Town Hall,” an event in response to the tragedy in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday, Aug. 19 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 149 Springfield Avenue, Newark.

According to a news release from organizers, the Rev. David Jefferson, pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church and NJ State President of the National Action Network, will lead the event, which will “address the heinous acts of violence in Charlottesville and the inaction by the White House to address bigotry and racism.”

Organizers stated that Jefferson will be joined by Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, People's Organization for Progress, the NAACP, the NJ Black Caucus and local clergy members.

“We must come together, people of all colors and faiths,” Jefferson said. “The [direction] this country is headed does not allow us to stand on the sideline and watch as people are attacked for promoting a humanity of love and peace.”
