Newark Fire Captain's Death Under Investigation: Co. Prosecutor
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating after a fire captain was found dead in a fire station early Saturday.
NEWARK, NJ — A Newark fire captain was found unresponsive in his fire station early Saturday and later was pronounced dead at University Hospital, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
A retired firefighter also was found unconscious at the fire house located at 269-271 Park Ave. and taken to the hospital. There were no signs of violence, authorities said.
The fire captain's death is under investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office homicide and major crimes task force, Essex County Acting Prosecutor Theodore Stephens II said.

The release of the captain's official cause of death is pending autopsy results from the regional medical examiner, according to authorities. Sources told News 4 New York the fire captain's death was a result of an overdose.
