Newark Firefighters Rescue Arson Suspect From Rooftop: Officials

A rooftop rescue took place in Newark. A firefighter was burned, and five people were relocated after the blaze, authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — Newark firefighters rescued an arson suspect from a rooftop during a blaze on Wednesday, authorities said.

Newark firefighters responded to a home on Abinger Place at 3:30 p.m. After a second alarm was called at 3:47 p.m., about 80 fire personnel were at the scene, according to the Newark Department of Public Safety.

Firefighters rescued the suspected arsonist, Stephen M. Jones, 24, of Newark, after he fled to the roof of the home. He was arrested immediately afterwards, authorities said.

Jones suffered burns to his hands, and a firefighter suffered burns to his neck. Emergency responders transported Jones and the firefighter to University Hospital for treatment of injuries, authorities said.

The fire was placed under control at 4:14 p.m.

No other injuries were reported. However, four adults and a child were relocated after the fire, authorities said.

Police charged Jones with arson. No additional information was immediately available.
