Stevenson, a Newark native, was the only U.S. male boxer to gain a medal in the Olympics.
NEWARK, NJ — The City of Newark will honor 19-year-old Newark native and Olympic boxing silver medalist Shakur Stevenson with a parade at noon on Sunday, Aug. 28. The parade will start at Military Park and head down Broad Street to City Hall at 920 Broad Street, where Stevenson will be recognized for his performance in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics last week, in the bantamweight division.
According to city officials, Stevenson - a Newark native - is the oldest of nine siblings. He took up boxing at age five under his grandfather Wali Moses, and won the 2014 AIBA Youth World Championships, 2014 Youth Olympic Games, and the 2015 Senior US Olympic Trials.
Stevenson was the only U.S. male boxer to gain a medal in the Olympics, getting edged out in the gold medal match to Cuba’s Robeisy Ramirez on points.
