Dear Governor Murphy, Newark-Essex elected officials

Our community is facing a crisis. Elders, single individuals, and families with students are finding themselves without a home. They are forced to sleep in cars, at train stations, and in overcrowded temporary shelters. This is happening right here in Newark-Essex County at an alarming rate. We implore Governor Murphy and our local and state legislators to put a moratorium on the evictions that’s taking place in Newark & County of Essex. The current eviction rates are not just numbers; they represent real people who are struggling every day. According to the Eviction Lab at Princeton University, Newark has one of the highest eviction rates among large U.S cities (Eviction Lab). The situation has only worsened due to the economic impact of COVID-19 pandemic which left many unemployed or underemployed. This call to action isn't just about statistics; it's about human lives - our neighbors, friends, family members who are in need immediate assistance now. Elected officials must act now before more people find themselves without a roof over their heads. We need all our elected officials to come together to help the community and those most vulnerable among us. I am urging Governor Murphy, and our local/state/ federal legislators for an immediate halt on evictions in Newark-Essex County until we can find sustainable housing solutions for those affected by this crisis.
