Newark Ironbound Community Fights Back Against 30 Story Development

In the 360 Newark plan: Shaping our City together it states that “the heart of Newark is it’s people and their diverse voice” If this is true why was the 6th Amendment to the Riverfront Redevelopment Plan passed by Newark’s City Council on September 5, 2024?

This ordinance allows a Developer to build up to 30 stories in a 12 story zone. It's disheartening how Iberia 2 Reality Urban Renewal LLC has no respect or regard for the Ironbound Community and our wishes. Their project proposes four structures, two 30 story towers and two 26 story towers, something many of us disagree with having being built in our neighborhood.
The Ironbound is a well-established community with a unique character defined by its low-rise buildings and strong sense of community. The proposed skyscraper in the Iberia project would drastically alter the landscape, casting long shadows and disrupting the neighborhood's aesthetic appeal. This will drastically change the character of the Ironbound and create more strain on our infrastructure. This also allows future high-rises of the same magnitude to be built in our neighborhoods.

The Ironbound is already overwhelmed and overburdened by polluters, traffic, lack of parking, flooding, and now, the influx of high-density residential development like the proposed project at the Iberia site. As an Environmental Justice Community deemed so by the EPA and DEP, our Community continues to fight for clean air because of the massive industrial Companies like Covanta, Darling, and a proposed 4th Power Plant just to name a few. Our Passaic River is contaminated by Agent Orange which was used in the Vietnam War.
In 2016 Newark made history for being the first in the nation to pass the Environmental Justice & Cumulative Impact ordinance. This was passed to address the major impacts of industries that affects residents health to this day.

Let's make history again by voting NO to two 30 story buildings and two 26 story buildings in the Ironbound that will add to the existing cumulative impacts.
Let the community be truly heard!
