Newark Man Allegedly Robbed 7-Eleven, Had Box Cutter: Police

NEWARK, NJ — Essex County sheriff’s officers arrested a man accused of robbing a 7-Eleven store in Newark, authorities announced Monday.

According to the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, officers on patrol were traveling south on Elizabeth Avenue near East Runyan Street when they were flagged down by nearby residents, who told them a robbery just took place.

The witnesses told officers that a man dressed in all black clothing entered the convenience store on the corner of Runyan and Elizabeth and held up the store clerk. He then left with an unknown amount of money, authorities said.

Police immediately entered the store and spoke with the cashier on duty, who corroborated their story, authorities said.

Soon afterward, police located a suspect in the robbery in a vehicle heading east on Runyan Street. The officers got into their marked police car, turned on their lights and sirens and followed the suspect.

When police caught up to the vehicle and ordered the driver to stop, he immediately complied and was arrested, authorities said.

Police searched the driver, Anthony Gibbs, 60, of Newark, finding $306 in cash and an orange box cutter, which he allegedly “gestured to” during the robbery, authorities said.

Police charged Gibbs with robbery, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, and criminal mischief. He was transported to the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark.
