Newark Man Arrested Day After Fatal Shooting, Charged With Murder
Police arrested an accused gunman a day after a fatal shooting in Newark, authorities said.
NEWARK, NJ — Police arrested an accused gunman a day after a fatal shooting in Newark, authorities announced Monday.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said Fuquan Johnson, 34, of Newark, has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Tanton Venable, 47, of Newark.
Newark police responded to a report of a shooting on the 100-block of First Street at 11:42 a.m. on July 2. Officers found Venable suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:55 a.m.

Police arrested Johnson on July 3. He was charged with first degree murder, in addition to second degree unlawful possession of a weapon, second degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, second degree certain persons, and third degree receiving stolen property.
Johnson remains in custody at the Essex County Correctional Facility.
