Newark Man Brutally Beaten In His Apartment, Jury Returns Guilty Verdict: ECPO
A verdict has been reached in a case involving a brutal beating that put a man into a coma for two weeks, Essex County prosecutors said.
NEWARK, NJ — A verdict has been returned in a case involving a brutal beating that put a man into a coma for two weeks in Newark, prosecutors announced Tuesday.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the attack took place last year when the 28-year-old victim’s roommate let Gabriel Perez, 28, and Bruno Caetano, 38, into their apartment on New Jersey Railroad Avenue.
After being let into the apartment, the two men assaulted the victim, who spent two weeks in a coma, prosecutors said.

On Tuesday, a jury convicted Perez of second-degree conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, second-degree aggravated assault, and third-degree eluding.
Caetano previously pleaded to a charge of second-degree aggravated assault. He was sentenced to five years in New Jersey state prison pursuant to the No Early Release Act, which requires a person to serve 85 percent of their sentence.
