Newark Man’s Accused Killer Arrested, Charged With Murder: Prosecutors
Police have charged a man with murder in connection with the death of a Newark resident last year, authorities announced Friday.

NEWARK, NJ — Police have charged a man with murder in connection with the death of a Newark resident last year, authorities announced Friday.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, Juan Leandry, 23, of Newark, was arrested and charged with the murder of Davion Sumler, 34, of Newark.
Prosecutors released the following statement about the allegations against Leandry:

“On Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at 1:40 a.m., Newark police discovered Sumler on the 300-block of South 20th Street, Newark, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:06 a.m. After an investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force, Leandry was arrested and charged on March 16 with first-degree murder. He was also charged with first-degree conspiracy to commit murder; second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon; second-degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose; second-degree arson; and second-degree conspiracy to commit arson.”
Leandry is being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark, authorities said.
