Newark Man Sexually Assaulted Family Member, Sentenced: Prosecutor

The abuse began when the victim was 11 years of age and continued until she was 14, Essex County prosecutors said.

NEWARK, NJ — A Newark resident was sentenced to 25 years in state prison for sexually assaulting his stepdaughter, prosecutors announced Monday.

The 37-year-old man’s identity is being withheld to protect the victim, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, which released the following statement about the case:

“According to [court] testimony, the abuse began when the victim, now 16, was 11 years of age and continued until she was 14. The sexual assaults occurred in the family home while the victim’s mother was at work. Upon learning of the abuse in November 2022, the family contacted the Newark Police Department. The defendant was arrested later that month.”

A jury found the man guilty of eight counts of sexual contact and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.

He was sentenced to 25 years in New Jersey state prison on Friday. His sentence is subject to the No Early Release Act, and he will have to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law upon his release from prison, prosecutors said.
