“An officer observed a suspect fire a handgun at other responding officers from a second-floor balcony area of a residence. The officers took up tactical positions and called for the Newark Police Division’s Emergency Response Team, which evacuated residents from the first and third floors, deploying robots and pole cameras to ensure that no other residents remained inside.”

Police released bodycam footage of the incident, which can be seen below. In the video, a pair of loud discharges – apparently gunshots – can be heard in the distance.

Police eventually apprehended the alleged shooter, Carlos Green, 64, of Newark, without further incident, authorities said.

Officers recovered two firearms from Green’s apartment after getting a search warrant. He faces charges of aggravated assault against police, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and hindering apprehension, authorities said.

Newark Public Safety Director Brian O’Hara said the involved officers remained calm despite being fired upon, and performed their duty with the “utmost restraint and determination.”

“Because of their professionalism, innocent people were evacuated from danger, the suspect was safely taken into custody, and no one was injured despite this dangerous situation,” O’Hara said.
