Newark Murder Suspect Commits Suicide In N.J. Basement: Police
A 35-year-old man wanted for allegedly murdering his nephew fatally shot himself in the basement of a New Jersey home, authorities say.

NEWARK, NJ — A 35-year-old Newark man wanted for allegedly murdering his nephew committed suicide in a Bloomfield home’s basement as police attempted to arrest him last week, authorities say.
Omar Broadway, 35, of Newark, was wanted in connection with the May 4 shooting death of his nephew, Najee Broadway, 18, also from Newark, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Police found the younger Broadway’s body on Marie Place in Newark suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, prosecutors said.

A subsequent investigation from the Essex County Major Crimes Task Force led to murder charges against Omar Broadway and Kenneth Durant, 36, of Newark.

“Detectives from the Prosecutor’s Office and agents assigned to the FBI Fugitive Task Force developed information that Omar Broadway was in a residence on Andrew Court in Bloomfield. As authorities surrounded the building [on June 9], Omar Broadway apparently shot himself in the basement of the house.”
Detectives entered the residence and attempted to render first aid, but Broadway was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:45 p.m.
Authorities found a handgun next to Broadway’s body, prosecutors said.
Broadway’s body was taken to the NJ Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy will be performed.
Durant, the other suspect wanted for this homicide remains at large, according to Fennelly. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Durant can call the Prosecutor’s Tips Line at (877) 847-7432.
