Newark Nonprofit Brings Back Free Glassblowing Workshops In 2024

NEWARK, NJ — There’s a lot you can learn by “playing” with fire and breaking glass, a nonprofit in Newark says.

GlassRoots – a nonprofit in the Newark area that aims to empower youth by teaching them glassblowing skills – is bringing back two free workshops for local students in 2024: the winter session of Youth Entrepreneurship Spirit (YES), and the PRISM Club: A Teen LGBTQ+ Art-Making Collective.

Here’s what to know about each program, the nonprofit says:

YES PROGRAM “Free for Newark students, Youth Entrepreneurial Spirit (YES) is a unique art and entrepreneurship program designed exclusively for high school students. While developing skills in glassblowing, fusing and flamework, students also gain in-depth, hands-on lessons in maintaining a creative business through the guidance of professional artists, designers, and fabricators from New Jersey and New York.”

PRISM CLUB “PRISM Club: A Teen LGBTQ+ Art-Making Collective welcomes youth ages 14-18 to create glass art in a safe space that thrives on diversity and inclusion. The club will meet on Saturday afternoons to explore a variety of glassmaking techniques, including glassblowing, flameworking, jewelry fashioning, mosaics, stained glass and more.”
