Newark Police Arrest 16 People; Charges Include Assault, Weapons

NEWARK, NJ — Newark police recently announced the arrests of more than a dozen people who were wanted in connection with crimes that took place in the city.

The Newark Department of Public Safety released a list of charges against 16 people who were arrested in November (see below).

  • Alberto Torres, 42, of Newark, was arrested on November 5, 2024, in the North Ward, for an outstanding warrant for five counts of robbery, including a bank robbery. He faces charges of robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
  • Shakil Dawes, 42, of Florence, NJ, was arrested on October 30, 2024. He was wanted for an outstanding warrant in connection with a shooting that occurred on October 1, 2024, in the 300 block of South 10th Street. He faces charges of conspiracy, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and criminal mischief.
  • Daquan Lapread, 30, of Newark, was arrested on October 29, 2024 at Halsey Street. He, along with Shakil Dawes, was being sought for an outstanding warrant related to a shooting that occurred on October 1, 2024, in the 300 block of South 10th Street. He similarly faces charges of conspiracy, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and criminal mischief.
  • Shawn T. Ingram, 40, of Edison, was arrested on November 1, 2024, for an outstanding warrant issued in connection with a shooting that occurred on June 23, 2021, in the 400 block of 4th Avenue West, where two victims were shot. Ingram faces two counts of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
  • Corine Black, 42, of Jersey City, was arrested on November 1, 2024, in the 300 block of Doremus Avenue. She was being sought for an outstanding warrant for weapon possession and CDS activity on September 9, 2024, at South 11th Street and Madison Avenue. She faces charges of possession of a destructive device, two counts of possession of prohibited weapons (large capacity magazine), and two counts of CDS possession.
  • Robert R. Joseph, 47, of Irvington, was arrested on November 5, 2024, for an outstanding warrant in connection with a shooting that occurred on February 25, 2024, in the 600 block of Orange Street. Joseph is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and certain persons prohibited from weapon possession.
  • Brandon Nelson-Lyde, 30, of Newark, was arrested on November 1, 2024, for an outstanding warrant for an incident that occurred on September 23, 2024, at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. He faces charges of terroristic threats, burglary, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and harassment.
  • Joseph Bethea, 45, of Newark, was arrested on November 1, 2024, due to an outstanding warrant for an incident that occurred on September 27, 2024, in the Central Ward. He faces two counts of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of other weapons, and criminal mischief.
  • Tariq Turner, 36, of Newark, was arrested on October 29, 2024, in Elizabeth. He was being sought for an outstanding warrant in Linden, NJ.
  • Oscar Ventura-Urena, 23, of Newark, was arrested on November 4, 2024, after being sought on an outstanding warrant for an incident that occurred on October 29, 2024, at the 200 block of Market Street. Ventura-Urena faces charges of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
  • Jaquan Bankston, 20, of Newark, was arrested on November 4, 2024. He was being sought for an outstanding warrant for 16 counts of burglary, including three counts of burglary into three vehicles in the 300 block of Washington Street on September 14, 2024. He faces charges of burglary, 16 counts of possession of burglary tools, theft, and 16 counts of criminal mischief.
  • Jamar McHaney, 32, of Newark, was arrested on November 4, 2024, for an outstanding warrant on an incident that occurred at Martens Avenue near Tremont Avenue in Newark on October 20, 2024. He faces charges of unlawful possession of a weapon, simple assault, and unlawful possession of other weapons.
  • Keshan Dobbins, 30, of Newark, was arrested on November 6, 2024, for an outstanding warrant issued due to an incident that occurred on August 16, 2024, in the 100 block of Parker Street. Dobbins faces charges of unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, eight counts of CDS possession, CDS distribution, and CDS distribution within 1,000 ft. of a school.
  • Alfuquan Hubbard, 34, of Newark, was arrested on November 6, 2024, for an outstanding warrant in connection with an incident that occurred on October 15, 2024, in the 500 block of Springfield Avenue. He faces charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, and violation of a restraining order, along with contempt of court for three additional outstanding warrants.
  • Stevens Metelot, 28, of Irvington, was arrested on November 6, 2024. He was being sought for a stabbing that occurred on October 19, 2024, in the 700 block of Sanford Avenue. He faces charges of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, criminal trespass, and conspiracy.
  • Raymond Jenkins, 30, of Newark, was arrested on November 6, 2024, on an outstanding warrant for a burglary that occurred on July 17, 2024, at Cutler Street near Victoria Avenue. He faces charges of burglary, theft, criminal trespass, and conspiracy. Jenkins also faces charges of contempt of court for four outstanding warrants.

Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé credited members of the Newark Police Division’s Major Crime/Fugitive Apprehension Team and SWAT for the arrests. Fragé said that the department was also thankful for the assistance of University Hospital Medical Services.
