Newark Police Have New Website

Residents can submit crime tips via the site

Newark residents can now submit news tips and monitor any criminal activity in their neighborhood through the Newark Police Department's new website.

The website, which launched this week, features a high tech interactive map showing various crimes throughout the city. Buttons at the top of the map direct residents to either sign up for email news alerts or submit crime tips to police.

The map's icons showing different criminal incidents can be turned on or off. For example, residents can decide whether they want to solely see all the homicides in Newark or carjackings.

The previous website simply had charts showing crime statistics in each precinct.

The new interactive map uses technology by Utah-based Internet company, CrimeReports.com, "the largest, most comprehensive crime-mapping website in the world," according to their business website.

Besides the interactive map, the new police website also has a wealth of features: a welcome page with a message from Acting Police Director Samuel DeMaio; a widget to translate the website into various languages; a link to the Newark police Facebook page; a short history on the department; and photos of precinct commanders.

The website was designed by Newark police Detecive Jim Bircsak.
