Newark Police Officer Pinned To Car At Crash Scene: Authorities

A Clifton resident was charged with assault by auto and causing bodily injury while driving under the influence, Newark police said.

NEWARK, NJ — A Newark police officer was hospitalized after he was pinned to a car at the scene of a crash on Sunday, authorities said.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, the officer was at the scene of a collision around 3:10 a.m. at McCarter Highway and 3rd Avenue on Sunday, when a car hit his vehicle, pushing it into him and pinning his legs.

Emergency responders transported the injured officer to University Hospital, where he was reportedly in stable condition, police stated.

Authorities arrested the driver, Fernando Carrillo, 20, of Clifton, and charged him with assault by auto and causing bodily injury while driving under the influence.
