Newark Public Charter School's ‘Parent University’ Inspires Hundreds

Marion P. Thomas Charter School (MPTCS) launched its innovative Parent University program this year, attracting hundreds of parents to workshops and events which provided resources to parents that empowered them to be leading partners in their children's education.

“When parents are equal partners in their children's education, it leads to better academic outcomes and a stronger school community,” said Christopher Abbaleo, Assistant Superintendent of Marion P. Thomas Charter School. “Parent University is addressing family engagement head-on and has fostered stronger communication and bonds as a result. The impact on students, their families and our school is invaluable.”

Parent University events have drawn over 200 parents to a comprehensive range of workshops on academic and practical skills like literacy and math support, financial planning, credit score improvement, nutritious meal preparation, and homeownership. Additionally, the program included classes for parents who are learning to speak English, ensuring that language barriers do not hinder their involvement.

The program also prioritizes the social and emotional well-being of families through sessions on effective communication strategies, creating a nurturing home environment, and advocating for their children. All sessions are conducted by experienced educators, counselors, and experts in various fields.

“We were very intentional about the workshops we offered and the structure of the program, making certain they were relevant to the diverse interests and needs of our community,” said Michele Griffin, Managing Director of Parent University.

The program’s hybrid structure of virtual and in-person events has made it accessible and convenient for all families, ensuring that parents can participate regardless of their schedules.

“Parent University was great! Not only did I learn practical and academic skills that I can use to help my child and myself, but I enjoyed social events like Family Skate Night and the Paint & Sip. It was the perfect vehicle to help me support and bond with my child and other families,” said Brianne Drummond, parent participant in the program.

“Looking ahead to the upcoming school year, we aim to expand Parent University to engage even more families, because strong connections between the school and community are essential,” continued Michele Griffin. “We want to build on this year’s successes, so we’re planning to introduce new workshops and resources that further address what our families need and care about.”
