Newark Public School Musical Prodigies Shine At NJPAC's Prudential Hall

Newark, NJ — On June 3, 2024, more than 1,000 enthusiastic third and fourth grade students from Newark Public Schools took center stage in an incredible display of musical talent at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center's Prudential Hall.

The performance marked the culmination of their journey through the Recorder Arts for Musical Pathways Program (R.A.M.P), a collaborative initiative between the Newark Board of Education and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC).

Highlighting the evening's festivities was the stirring performance by a select group of students on the prestigious Betty Wold Johnson Stage, comprising the All-Star Recorder Choir.

Behind the scenes, the success of this grand production was made possible by the dedication of over 60 NBOE Music Educators hailing from 40 schools across the District. Throughout the academic year, these educators participated in two sessions of in-class support, meticulously guided by NJPAC's Recorder Arts Master Teacher.

The sessions served as invaluable professional development opportunities, equipping Music Educators with a diverse range of strategies to effectively integrate the Recorder instrument into the third and fourth-grade General Music curriculum. Emphasizing essential skills such as music literacy, breath control, and hand-eye coordination, educators honed their craft to nurture the musical prowess of their students.

Superintendent León expressed heartfelt gratitude for the dedicated music teachers and talented students, remarking, “This culminating event stands as a testament to the enduring partnership between NBOE and NJPAC, fostering a harmonious blend of education and the arts to empower the next generation of musical talents within the community. Great musicians have always been from Newark. Great musicians are here in Newark before us all right now!!!”

The goal of the R.A.M.P. is to partner with school districts to teach every third and fourth grader how to read music and to further music education through the recorder.
