Newark Rally Will Protest Indictment In Breonna Taylor Shooting

A rally is being planned in Newark to protest what activists are calling a "weak indictment" in the shooting of Breonna Taylor.

NEWARK, NJ — A rally is being planned for Thursday in Newark to protest what activists are calling a “weak indictment” in the police-involved shooting of Breonna Taylor.

The emergency rally and protest is being spearheaded by the People’s Organization for Progress (POP), the group which held a massive rally in the name of George Floyd earlier this year. It will take place at 4:30 p.m. at the Lincoln Statue at 12 Springfield Avenue. Attendees are being asked to wear face masks.

Former Louisville police detective Brett Hankison has been indicted by a grand jury with wonton endangerment for shooting into neighboring apartments during the March 13 police raid in which Breonna Taylor was killed. Charges have not been made against the two other police officers involved in her death: Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly and Detective Myles Cosgrove.

“Neither the 12 million dollars, nor the minor indictment of wanton endangerment of only one officer in that slaughter, come anywhere near the justice the world and the family are calling for in this horrific case,” POP founder Lawrence Hamm said.
