Newark Residents To Hold 2021 Martin Luther King March

NEWARK, NJ — The People’s Organization For Progress (POP) will hold its annual Martin Luther King march in Newark on Saturday, Jan. 16.

The march will take place at noon, beginning at the Lincoln Statue, 12 Springfield Avenue, according to a news release from organizers.

The march is being held to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who was born on Jan. 15. The theme of this year’s event is “The People Are Suffering: Martin Luther King March For Racial And Economic Justice.”

“We are marching against racism and fascism and to uphold the ideals for which Dr. King stood,” POP chair Lawrence Hamm said.

“We are asking everyone outraged by the racist white supremacist terrorist attack on the Capitol and attempted fascist coup to march with us,” Hamm said.

Participants planning to attend are asked to wear face masks and gloves and to practice social distancing.
