Newark Runoff Election Results: Silva, Council, Kelly Win

NEWARK, NJ — A final showdown for three Newark city council seats took place on Tuesday as part of a municipal runoff election. Polls closed at 8 p.m.

According to uncertified results from the county clerk, Michael Silva, Patrick Council and Dupre Kelly each won their respective races (see below).

New Jersey’s largest city went to the polls on May 10 to vote for mayor and members of the council. Several candidates emerged victorious. Read More: Newark Council Runoffs Loom, Ras Baraka Claims Victory

But several other races with more than two candidates remained undecided, because no candidate got 50 percent of the vote plus one – which triggered a runoff election in that ward on June 14.

Here are the uncertified results of the runoff, as per the Essex County Clerk's Office.

EAST WARD

In the East Ward, four candidates sought to replace Augusto Amador in the city's East Ward, who is not running for re-election: Anthony Campos, Jonathan Seabra, Michael Silva and Louis Weber.

Two emerged as the frontrunners: Campos and Silva.

With 23 of 23 districts reported, Silva has apparently captured a seat on the council, according to uncertified results:

  • Michael Silva - 1,509 votes (57.16%)
  • Anthony Campos - 1,131 votes (42.84%)

Silva claimed victory in a social media post on Wednesday. He wrote:

"I would like to thank Mr. Anthony Campos for reaching out to me and congratulating me on yesterday’s victory. Mr. Campos and I were opponents and not enemies! While we clearly have our differences , I respect the passion with which he fought this race and the commitment he has made in being a lifelong resident of the Ironbound. I look forward to working with Mr. Campos, his supporters, and all the residents and stakeholders in our ward to making OUR community the best it can be!"

SOUTH WARD

In the South Ward, six candidates competed to replace John Sharpe James, who is not running for re-election. The candidates were: Terrance Bankston, Christina Cherry, Patrick Council, Douglas Freeman, Trenton Jones and Cynthia Truitt-Rease.

Two emerged as the frontrunners: Council and Bankston.

With 42 of 42 districts reported, Council has apparently captured a seat on the council, according to uncertified results:

  • Terrance Bankston - 739 votes (28.58%)
  • Patrick Council - 1,847 votes (71.42%)

Council claimed victory in a pair of social media posts on Tuesday.

WEST WARD

In the West Ward, six candidates sought to replace Joseph McCallum, who is not running for re-election. McCallum pleaded guilty in connection with a bribery and kickback scheme in March.

The candidates were Lyndon Brown, Oscar James II, Lavita Johnson, Dupre Kelly, Michelle Lyn Middleton, and Chigozie Onyema.

Two emerged as the frontrunners: Kelly and Onyema.

With 37 of 37 districts reported, Kelly has apparently captured a seat on the council, according to uncertified results:

  • Chigozie Onyema - 1,312 votes (41.39%)
  • Dupre Kelly - 1,858 votes (58.61%)
