NEWARK, NJ — Newark’s first Whole Foods supermarket is officially open for business.

The much-anticipated store – which many local residents and officials have called a symbol of growth and hope in the city’s downtown area – opened its doors Wednesday with a “bread breaking” ceremony at its new location at 633 Broad Street in the newly reborn Hahne Building.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, several Whole Foods Market staff members and representatives from the Whole Cities Foundation were on hand for Wednesday’s celebration.

In December, Whole Foods stated that it expected the new store to create 110 jobs.
