Newark’s Drive-In Movie Theater Has A New Home: Here’s Where
For months, Moonlight Cinema teased movie fans in the Brick City with promises that it would eventually reopen – and be better than ever.

NEWARK, NJ — Newark’s only drive-in movie theater has good news: it’s officially returning for summer 2021.
According to a social media update from Moonlight Cinema, it will be reopening for the season on Saturday, July 24 – its first anniversary.

The Moonlight Cinema, owned by Siree Morris and Ayana Stafford-Morris, made big waves last year when it launched amid the coronavirus pandemic, giving people some much-needed escape and entertainment.
It was the first time that New Jersey's largest city has seen a drive-in theater since the late 1980s – a rarity in its own regard. But the theater, which spotlights the work of Black-owned creators and has given jobs to local teens and young people, also endeared itself to Newark in many other ways before closing for the season.

Despite its resounding success, Moonlight Cinema fans endured a nail-biting winter and spring when its owners announced that it would be moving from its site at the former Newark Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium at 54 Bridge Street.

For months, the theater teased movie fans in the Brick City with promises that it would eventually reopen – and be better than ever. Now, the wait is over, its owners said Monday.
“We’re moving to 220 Orange Street in Newark,” the social media post read. “Same vibes, new location … See you under the Newark moonlight.”
