Newark School Board Election 2018: Early Results Released
The Moving Newark Schools Forward slate may have swept an important school board election, according to early results.

NEWARK, NJ — With the early results from the Essex County Clerk’s Office returned, it’s likely that the Moving Newark Schools Forward slate of candidates have captured a clean sweep in the city’s local school board election on Tuesday.
With 108 of 110 districts reported and three seats on the board up for grabs, the Moving Newark Schools Forward candidates each had sizable leads over their opponents as of Wednesday morning. (Learn more about the candidates here)
- Dawn Haynes - 5,240 votes (26.95%)
- Asia Norton – 4,149 votes (21.34%)
- Yambeli Gomez – 3,725 votes (19.16%)

- Jameel IBRAHIM - 1,032 votes (5.31%)
- Ché J.T. COLTER - 1,018 votes (5.24%)
- Denise COLE - 1,000 votes (5.14%)
- Omayra MOLINA - 888 votes (4.57%)
- Yolanda JOHNSON - 740 votes (3.81%)
- Marcus ALLEN - 517 votes (2.66%)
- Khalil HANNAH - 384 votes (1.98% )
- Johnnie LATTNER - 375 votes (1.93%)
- Robert HOUSE - 203 votes (1.04%)
- Barbara Anne TODISH - 141 votes (0.73%)
- Write-In - 31 votes (0.16%)
The candidates that emerge victorious when the final vote tally is certified will help shape the future of the Newark public school district at a crucial juncture in its history. Earlier this year, local school and municipal officials celebrated as New Jersey officially returned control of the Newark Public School District back to the city after 23 years.

After taking over control of the district in 1995 due to allegations of severe mismanagement, the state has regulated many aspects of the Newark Public School District, such as personnel, curriculum and programs, tying local administrators' hands on many of the most important issues facing their schools.

One of the most immediate signs of change has been the district's new chief administrator, Interim Superintendent of Schools Robert Gregory, who was selected by the Newark Board of Education.
