NEWARK, NJ — A simple haircut can do wonders for a child’s self-esteem, and the evidence was seen on the smiling faces of dozens of Newark youth as they headed back to school this year.
As part of their annual back-to-school tradition, local barbers, Newark police and firefighters have been offering free haircuts to kids throughout the city in each precinct. This year, the effort included a literal twist: braiding for girls.
The annual campaign offered attendees a carnival-like atmosphere, including a bounce house, games and food. Police and firefighters also handed out free school supplies to attending youth, giving them a leg up on the new year.

Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said this year’s haircut events are part of the department’s community outreach efforts.
“It goes a long way in teaching our children police are people, just like them,” Ambrose said.
