Newark Schools Host Sharon Robinson, Daughter Of Baseball Legend
Sharon Robinson, author and daughter of civil rights pioneer Jackie Robinson, visited three Newark schools.
NEWARK, NJ — The United Way of Essex and West Hudson (UWEWH) and Scholastic Book Fairs recently hosted Sharon Robinson, author and daughter of baseball legend Jackie Robinson, for a book signing tour at three public schools in Newark.
Robinson’s appearances were part of the My Very Own Library (MVOL), a literacy initiative dedicated to placing books into the hands of children in need, according to a joint news release.
Robinson is the author of several works of fiction and nonfiction, as well as an educational consultant for Major League Baseball. She is the founder of Breaking Barriers: In Sports, In Life a baseball-themed national character education curriculum that helps empower students overcome obstacles in their lives.

Prior to joining Major League Baseball, Robinson was an educator and taught at Yale, Columbia, Howard and Georgetown University. She currently serves as vice chairman of the Jackie Robinson Foundation.
The City of Newark was one of seven communities worldwide selected to take part in the MVOL program, according to a news release.
