Newark Students Flee Burning School Bus: Report
The team lost its uniforms and equipment in the blaze, but track officials let them compete anyway, a report said.
Newark, NJ –Dozens of student-athletes from Malcolm X. Shabazz High School in Newark escaped a burning school bus this weekend on their way to the Essex County Relays in Jersey City.
The Sunday morning fire – which may have started under the bus - didn’t injure any of the 32 students, but it destroyed their sports equipment and uniforms, Damon Harrison, the school’s head track and field coach, told NJ.com.
Track officials delayed the start of the meet and waived the uniform rules so that the team could compete, the Associated Press reported.
