Newark Teen Entrepreneurs Make Splash With Student-Created Hot Sauce

A farmer's market at Newark Beth Israel will sell Rider Heat Hot Sauce, which was created by the West Side High School Business Club.

NEWARK, NJ — A high school business club in Newark is making a big splash with their student-created hot sauce.

Rider Heat Hot Sauce is a brainchild of teen entrepreneurs at West Side Ave, the School of Business and Finance’s business club at West Side High in Newark. The program gives local student a chance to gain hands-on experience in the business world, while also teaching college prep and financial literacy.

As part of the program, students assist in curating products to sell, managing their inventory supply chain along the way. And one of the first milestones for Rider Heat Hot Sauce will be selling it at a farmer’s market at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center this summer.

Here’s how the hospital describes the market, which will open for the season on Saturday, June 4:

“The Beth Greenhouse Farmers Market provides fresh fruits and vegetables to residents of Newark, and the Reverend Dr. Ronald B. Christian Community Health and Wellness Center serves as a gathering place where education is provided on healthy eating and cooking. Both have been welcomed additions in a neighborhood that is considered a food desert. They are part of RWJBarnabas Health Social Impact and Community Investment practice, which looks to address food insecurity in vulnerable communities throughout New Jersey, by creating access to fresh locally grown food.”

Earlier this month, members of the business club visited the hospital to learn more about the market. During their trip, the students stopped at the Community Health and Wellness Center, where they put on a taco-making demonstration using their hot sauce. President and CEO Darrell K. Terry was on hand to do a taste test of the finished product.
