Newark Teen Fatally Shot Near High School; No Arrests Made

A fatal shooting claimed the life of a 17-year-old victim in Newark. No arrests have been made as of Tuesday, authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — A fatal shooting near a local school claimed the life of a 17-year-old victim in Newark on Monday night, authorities said.

Newark police officers responded to South Orange Avenue and Ashland Street in Newark after getting a report about gunfire in the area, which is located near West Side High School. When they arrived, the officers found Khalif Harrington in the street, suffering from a gunshot wound, authorities said.

Harrington, a Newark resident, was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:46 p.m., according to a joint statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Newark Department of Public Safety.

No arrests have been made as of Tuesday, authorities said.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, is investigating the fatal shooting.
