Newark Used Car Dealership Robbed, Suspects Allegedly Cause Crash: Police

Three Newark police officers sustained minor injuries during a car chase, authorities say.

Newark, NJ – Newark police have arrested two men accused of robbing a used car dealership and later causing a car crash that injured three city police officers last week.

According to the Newark Police Department, officers responded to the Broad Street dealership around 4 p.m. on Jan. 21. Officers said that the owner reported he and two employees were robbed by three armed suspects who struck them and fled in a 2015 BMW.

Patrolling officers later spotted the BMW and attempted a motor vehicle stop, but the car allegedly took off, police stated.

Officers pursed the vehicle until it crashed into another Newark patrol car, authorities said.

At that point, officers arrested two of the car’s passengers, Rodney Wright, 21, and Yasime Jones, 21, and charged them with receiving stolen property.

A third suspect remains at large, police reported on Jan. 22.

Three patrol officers sustained minor injuries when their vehicles collided with each other during the brief pursuit, and were taken to University Hospital for treatment, authorities said.

The charges for Wright and Jones may be upgraded pending the outcome of an investigation, police added.
