NEWARK, NJ — It’s an iconic image of summer in the city: kids playing in the cool spray of an open fire hydrant. That’s what will take place this weekend in Newark when firefighters turn on the water – and turn up the fun.

As part of the Newark Department of Public Safety’s summer youth initiative, firefighters will open hydrants for the community from 1 to 4 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday at different locations in the city through Sept. 15.

The public is welcome to cool off and take a dip, officials said.
