Newark Woman Charged With Killing Pedestrian From Jersey City

A 31-year-old Jersey City man was crossing the street in Newark when a car hit and killed him, prosecutors say.

Newark, NJ - Authorities have arrested a 24-year-old Newark woman in connection with the fatal hit and run of a local pedestrian on April 9.

Police arrested Shawniece Strothers on Thursday and charged her with aggravated manslaughter and death by auto.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, around 6:40 a.m. on April 9, Mahmoud M. Baza, 31, of Jersey City, was killed while he crossing Mulberry Street at the intersection of Market Street.

The vehicle that struck Baza fled from the scene and was subsequently located a few blocks away, prosecutors stated.

Police arrested Strothers after detectives from the Prosecutor’s Major Crimes Task Force conducted an investigation. She was transported to the Essex County Correctional Facility; her bail was set at $350,000.
